'52' - Week 26

"a portrait of each of my children, once each week, in 2014"

Jaden: Lots of new experiences again this week. He tried the bungee jump at the carnival on Friday, drove the bumper cars for the first time by himself and is currently attending his first ever UNI sports camp all day for the next four days. I think this is going to be a summer he remembers, and I hope it's one of those summers that helps define his childhood. Every summer tells a story, and I hope for him, this one tells the story of a boy who was now grown up enough to be able to experience more adventure, but still young enough to embrace the magical moments of childhood. To be honest, I hope he always stays young enough at heart to experience life through the youthful eyes he has right now.

Brandon: This little cutie was such a ham all weekend long. He was picture perfect riding in the parade, literally skipped almost everywhere we went, tried some new rides at the carnival and wore his Panther hat with pride for the cameras. He had a little bit of a meltdown at church on Sunday morning, I think from being overly tired after a busy day and a Saturday night sleepover, but recovered nicely for the remainder of the weekend. And last night, he made the most adorable and colorful chalk drawing on our driveway. He drew rainbows, flowers, grass, the sky and clouds. And then he drew "Mommy." I stepped outside to check on him while cleaning up supper, and he said, "Mommy! I drew you! I gave you a tummy and a dress, but I did not give you a dinky or a bottom." When I politely told him that even mommies have bottoms, he told me he just didn't want to give me one. ;)

take me to the water

Sharing a few pictures from our night out on the water this week. Now that the motor is fixed and we have our boat back, we're looking forward to spending the rest of the summer on the water as much as possible. And the boys are both getting much more comfortable with the feel of the boat and how this whole operation works.

They looked so stinkin cute holding their paddles with their life vests, and they liked to pretend that they were the ones making the boat move instead of the motor.

With so much flooding around us, we made it easy by sticking to the local fishing pond this week, but with so many fish in the pond, we had great front row seats to the fish jumping out of the water all around us.

Jaden even got a lesson in how to use the trolling motor.

Between the pool and the boat, we're becoming regular water babies around here.

Happy Friday! We are looking forward to a fun weekend at our house...

our pool nights

One of our favorite things to do in the summer is go to the pool. With each passing year, our kids become bigger fans of the water, and this summer especially, they are happiest in their swimming suits, splashing around until we drag them out with their wrinkled toes and sleepy eyes. Though we visit the pool on the weekends, too, our favorite time to go is in the evening, after supper, often times when Daddy is having to work late. The Falls is not nearly as crowded, there's more open space to enjoy to ourselves, the sun isn't quite as intense and it's the perfect way to end the day. We pack a picnic supper to eat at a nearby park, throw a pizza in the oven before heading out or stop for a happy meal on these nights, and we don't come home until it's time for warm baths and bed.

Jaden loves to slide head first off the floating snake, go to the bigger pool to shoot water hoops with his friends and play catch in the water with the football. Brandon loves the elephant slide, all the water features and jumping in from the side of the pool. He's also become an expert bobber and is thrilled when he runs into one of his buddies in the water to play with.

Jaden has mastered his back float and Brandon has successfully tried wearing goggles. Sometimes we float the lazy river together, sometimes we get snacks from the concession area, and I love chatting with the other moms and dads as we dangle our feet in from the side and watch our kids play together.

With Jaden also attending the pool with his daycare class two days a week, we are definitely getting our money's worth out of our family pass this year. Looking forward to many more pool nights... and to hopefully getting Jaden to go down those big water slides with me by summer's end! ;)

They are goofballs.
