We had such a fun Sturgis Falls weekend. The weather didn't always cooperate for the weekend, but we seemed to time all of our activities just right and were able to fit everything in that we wanted to. Some carnival food, some rides and games... and of course... the parade. The parade was kind of a big deal this year.
Sturgis Falls is kind of a tradition in our family, especially when you consider the fact that my dad was part of the very first annual celebration back in 1976 as a member of the Saints Dixieland Band. (He is a super talented drummer, in case you didn't know!) I love that it's that one weekend every summer when everyone decides to come home. There are reunions and family gatherings and a special vibe around town. And this year was extra special, as my parents were selected to be the Grand Marshalls of the event.
After a very rainy Friday, the weather cleared up just in time for the opening ceremonies that evening. Cody and I both got off work early, fed the boys an early supper and headed to Overman Park to watch the introductions of all the dignitaries and get some pictures of my parents up on stage.
The boys thought it was pretty neat that Nana and Papa were up there in front of the crowd and were very well behaved as we stood around chatting with other honorees and watched Jay Stoddard and Mayor Crews address the crowd.
After the opening ceremonies, we headed over to Gateway Park for the carnival. This was the main event for the boys, and I was so thankful that it dried up Friday night since it was our only free night to take them. And the best part was that it wasn't crowded and there were no lines!
In awe of the Tornado... ;)
We headed straight for the Gator Coaster as Brandon had been waiting all week for this one. He was too scared to try it last summer, but confidently marched up the steps this year, handed off his tickets, and climbed into the second seat behind Ella.
Pictures from the spinning monkeys... Brandon was not at all sure about this one but didn't want to be left out when both Ella and Jaden decided to do it. His eyes were wide and his face expressionless almost the whole time until the end when we finally caught a few smirks and smiles.
The bumper cars. This was Jaden's first time trying one by himself, and Brandon was smiles the whole time.
The bungee jump... the highlight of the night...
Jaden treated this like he does everything else. With a little bit of caution. :) He wasn't quite sure what he was supposed to do and was perfectly content to not bounce himself too high. ;)
And then there was Brandon...
My dad said this is what he will remember most from this weekend and the celebration. Brandon was so little on this thing that he had trouble reaching his legs down to give himself a good enough jump. This carnival worker was the nicest we've ever seen, as he went out of his way to make sure Brandon had a good time. Every time Brandon couldn't quite reach the trampoline, this guy climbed on top, grabbed Brandon with both hands and pulled him down so that Brandon would bounce back up like a sling shot. We were all smiles watching Brandon fly and this worker smiled almost as much as we did. I told my dad he should definitely get promoted to Disney World. ;)
More from the carnival... funnel cakes, prizes and more rides.
We ended Friday night back at Overman Park in front of the talent show and with shared strawberry smoothies. You cannot do Sturgis without a smoothie!
More Sturgis still to come... so many pictures, so much fun. God bless Summer. :)
