"a portrait of each of my children, once each week, in 2016"
Jaden: We went out this past weekend and got this kiddo a new set of wheels. One without training wheels and with hand breaks. And then we took him over to the field across the street and had him try it out - his first ride on a bike without his trusted training wheels. He's never been much of a bike rider but we've got plans to do a lot more bike riding as a family this summer, and it was past time that he learn how to ride like a big kid. And it took not two minutes on a patch of grass, and he was doing it! We've still got work to do - especially on cement where he gets a lot more nervous and unsure of himself. But it was still pretty impressive how quickly he got the hang of it. If it hadn't been so darn windy, we would have put a lot more time in on that first day!
Brandon: A few things about him this past week. 1. The whole family joined him at school last week to watch him in his kindergarten music program. He was nervous the few days beforehand but then told me the night before that he was going to get up there and perform "like I'm proud of myself!" He did it - and he looked pretty cute singing This Little Light of Mine. 2. We spent this past Saturday afternoon at the UNI WRC swimming pool - finally taking advantage of my alumni status and enjoying the $5 family deal to make use of this awesome facility. Brandon loves the hot tub/whirl pool and especially loves the tall twisty waterslide - going down it over and over again. We'll be making much more use of this facility next winter. He wants to try the climbing wall! 3. He's always loved building with things but lately has been a Lego rock star. On days when it's not nice enough to play outside after school, he escapes to his bedroom for an hour or two at a time and pulls out all of his Lego's - only to show us some creation a couple of hours later. I'm so glad we created a space for him in his bedroom to do this. Last night he created a cabin with flower boxes and a fireplace straight out of Fixer Upper! 4. I've been getting into a good workout routine lately, and Brandon saw me doing some cool-down stretches the other night. Before I knew it he was leading all of us in a set of stretches and sit-ups he's been learning to do in his Exceptional Learning Program classroom once a week at school. It was the cutest thing - I had no idea how many fitness exercises he knew the names of, and his execution was on point!
