"a portrait of each of my children, once each week, in 2017"

Jaden: It finally happened. You and I both struggled through your math homework together last night. It took us almost an hour to do one worksheet, and I was getting almost as frustrated as you because I felt like I was failing you! I knew the answers, but I was struggling with remembering how to use the technique I learned when I was your age and being able to explain it to you so that it made sense. We finally got there together and finally figured it all out, but be prepared, buddy. Daddy and I aren't going to be much math help for you down the road. Google might prove to be a better teacher than us! ;)

Brandon: Your guitar instructor told me this week that he's never seen someone your age start off so strong and quickly in all of his years of teaching guitar to kids. He said that students like you are why he does what he does. I could just see your confidence blossom as you took in his words, and it was a pretty cool evening for us.
