Halloween '17 // The Great Pumpkin Carving

We held our traditional pumpkin carving event the Sunday afternoon and evening before Halloween. Our little artist Brandon looks forward to this event the entire month of October, and we have to remind him frequently that we don't want to carve too early or the pumpkins will rot before Halloween even arrives! He had big plans for this year's pumpkins, and took it upon himself to not only help clean out the insides of the pumpkins this year - but to actually do some carving himself!

It was so stinking cute watching him try to carve the top off this thing. Daddy and Jaden had to leave for basketball practice with promises that we would finish our carving when they returned that evening, but Brandon insisted on working on this while they were gone. Using this safe little carving tool, it took him about a full 30 minutes to slice through this thing, but there he sat on our dining table, pure concentration on his face... and his tongue hanging out! ;)

When Daddy and Jaden returned, we threw some soup on the stove and tackled all three of our carving pumpkins as a group. This is never Jaden's favorite event, and every year it takes some persuading to get him to shove his hands in there and get them good and dirty. And as for the pumpkin designs themselves? Brandon made Daddy stick with our traditional UNI pumpkin, we threw in one Halloween design of a bat, moon and jack-o-lantern... and then there was the prized one of them all...

Brandon had been dreaming of a Yoda carving since picking out his costume, and Daddy drew the perfect Yoda face - completely by hand! No tracing or templates for this guy. Look how good it turned out!

We rounded out our carving night with yummy soup and bread, Disney's The Haunted Mansion movie on TV... and a bunch of lit candles and jack-o-lanterns sitting on our hearth.

This was one of my favorite nights. I felt so blessed to be spending our first Halloween in our new home and loved the way our great room felt with the pulsing glow of candles and the smells of our soup and scented candles filling the air.

It was cozy and inviting and exactly how I hoped our new home would feel on holiday nights... and it was a great way to get us in the Halloween spirit.
