This past Sunday we gathered with family at my old stomping grounds - piling into the west bleachers beside the Cedar Falls High School track - to watch our buddy compete in his first track meet.
Brandon has always enjoyed running - or at least the competitive part of it - typically trying to show off his speed and racing his big brother whenever the opportunity arises. So when I asked him last summer if he would want to try competing with the Tiger Track Club during their upcoming spring season, he gave me an immediate yes - and never looked back!
He's been practicing at the outdoor UNI track twice a week with his club since the beginning of April, and he quickly learned that he definitely enjoys the short races over the distance running. (I don't blame him!) ;) And even before practices started, we were heading to the rec center a few times a week after school where he would run the indoor track, I would work out on the elliptical machine, and Jaden would get his basketball workout done in the gym below us.
Their first home meet in the middle of April ended up getting cancelled due to weather so he finally had a chance to compete this past weekend in what will be their only home meet of the season. (Darn weather!) We signed him up for the 100, 200, 400... and long jump.
And he did great! Out of 24 runners, he ended up placing second in the 100... and second in the long jump - with his best jump coming in at 7.5 feet! He also finished in the top six of the 200... after having to run to the starting line from the awards counter at the other end of the track in order to make his start time. ;)
He was so proud of himself and was so happy to start his own medal collection after watching Jaden earn so many over the last two years. And it was so cool to hear his name read over the outdoor speakers - twice - as a medal winner! Unfortunately with the weather giving us the issues it has, I'm not sure how many more meets we will make it to since the rest of them are travel meets, and our May schedule is a little tough. But he will continue to practice with the club for the remainder of the school year, and it's been a great introductory season for him so far!
