Christmas Weekend
With Christmas falling on a Tuesday this year, we got to slowly and quietly ease into and drag out our celebrating. I took off work the Friday prior to the start of the festivities, a tradition I've held for myself for several years now. With the boys still in school and Kaitlyn at daycare, I enjoyed a mommy day that included Hulu, books, coffee, and rest. It's typically the only day of the year I get to myself, and I thoroughly enjoy it, but it's also utilized to recharge my batteries and ready my spirit for the nearly two weeks of celebrating and full time mothering that lies ahead. We then had a quiet Friday night that included another Christmas movie and early bedtimes so we could be ready for Saturday's basketball tournament. After a day of basketball on Saturday, I did something I never do. I let the kids each open a present early! Truthfully it had been a rough week full of sickness and health scares for our family and people we love. We were a bit exhausted and a bit weary so I was looking for a way to spark our holiday spirit, and opening presents from Great Grandma Grayce definitely helped do the trick. Kaitlyn opened her very first ever Christmas present - a cute little purse filled with all the teethers and rattles she could want! Brandon received a Minecraft idea book, and Jaden opened a basketball rebounding attachment for our driveway hoop. But one of their favorite gifts was probably Mancala, a game that ended up getting played multiple times over Christmas break.
Sunday night was for our annual Christmas lights drive, but we added a twist to it this year. We cozied up in the van in our pajamas, waited until it was bedtime for Kaitlyn so that she could sleep comfortably and contentedly in her car seat during our drive, and picked up a Casey's pizza while out on the road. We ate pizza slices straight out of the cardboard box while driving from neighborhood to neighborhood, especially enjoying the big lights display designed and implemented by Cody's company.
It was a good, quiet weekend just for the five of us, and I loved every minute of it.
